NFA - National Federation of Anglers

The National Federation of Anglers is the governing body for freshwater angling in England. We actively promote and encourage angling development from grass roots, through clubs and regional bodies to the International squads

It is a fun and healthy sport enjoyed by millions of people throughout the UK every year. Anglers not only go fishing to catch fish but also because they enjoy and appreciate the environment in which it takes place.

The Coaching Sessions offer new and experianced anglers to appreciate and respect the environment using the interesting, fun, enjoyable and interactive learning method by way of angling. Some of the different aspects that might be learnt in conjucntion of angling techniques are;

  • Geography – Water Cycle and the Importance of Water; Weather Patterns, Wind Direction; Air Pressure.
  • Biology – Common Plants and Animals Found Close to the Water Side; Fish Anatomy; Photosynthesis; Food Chain; Pond Life; Fish Identification; Feeding Habits and Fish Handling.
  • Numeracy – Measuring Water Depth; Using Weights to Balance Floats; Line Strength and Test Curves of Rods.

Where it is not posible to fish on water different methods can be used and shown using the NFA’s dried skills technques. These different methods can often be fun and often improve anglers other skills such as co-ordination.

Waterside Safety; The Countryside Code; Assembling and Using a Range of Angling Equipment; Bait Identification and Selection.

All these skills enable young people to have an indepth understanding of their environment and learn how to fish safely and correctly.

Being Healthy – sport reduces the risk of ill health for young people. As an outdoor sport angling contributes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through social interaction, achievement and mental well-being.

Staying Safe – angling promotes community cohesion, and can help reduce youth crime, anti-social behaviour, bullying and discrimination. Organisations such as Get Hooked on Fishing, police crime prevention teams and youth services have all successfully used angling as means of engaging with young people.

Enjoying & Achieving – It can contribute to their personal and social development and to their enjoyment of leisure time. Angling is a fun sport undertaken in a healthy environment.

Making a Positive Contribution – angling engages young people in community activity, such as keeping the local pond, river or canal free of litter. It also develops their self-confidence and encourages positive behaviour and relationships.
