Letter Cutting in Stone
An increase in hand carved lettering in stone comes as a true relief. Less and less often do I find myself explaining the difference between hand cut and machined techniques. The life, freedom and rhythm of fine lettering has become almost an obsession for me.
After an intense spell training at the cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge, I have set up my own workshop cutting opening plaques, gravestones and memorials, larger scale architectural works, house signs and heraldic carving.
Most types of stone are suitable for lettering by slate stands out as the best for fine details. All my work is by commission, either done in the workshop or in situ.
For me the thrill of the work comes with the knowledge that each commission is unique, needing a new idea, and a fresh burst of energy.
