Chair Maker
John has been making chairs for the last 20 years. The rush seated ladder back designs based upon a style developed by Ernest Gimson, one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts movement early last century. John still maintains a contact with the family. He selects and seasons the ASH for the frame, it must be of the right quality, clean, straight grained and quick grown. Forty year coppice rotation is perfect. He uses fresh water rush (Scirpus Lacustris ) for the seat, these are harvested annually from the rivers Nene and Ouse. Speak to John , he is a living museum of rural life! Find out more about Chair Making
